    I remember reading a thread here about buying four-pound packages plus a queen and creating two colonies. There are people who do it. Doesn't seem worth the money savings to me.

    If you put each of the pound and a half of bees in a small enough box (probably a three frame nuc) they will probably take off pretty well. In my climate, in April, if you put them each in a 10 frame deep, they would not take off very well.
