I was wondering what most people on this forum use.

    8 or 10 frame hives

What seems to be more popular ?

I use 10 frames in the brood boxes, 9 in the honey supers.

Since I went to all mediums I got a few 8 frame boxes to use to catch swarms and use for splits. I like them. They are easy to lift etc., but they aren't standard. 10 frames is standard. I don't currently run any full size hives in them, but was considering running a couple of comparisons to see if it made any difference for production.

    Question

What is the advantage of using 9 frames in supers over 10 ?

10 and 9 is pretty much the standard.

Out of everyone I know, I can only think of one person that uses 8 frame equipment. I do know a number of people that use 10 in honey supers though.

The advantage of 9 frames over ton in the honey super is that the bees will draw the comb out fuller past the frame bars and then cap it which makes it easier to uncap for extraction.

    Beggee,

I see... But does it make you lose a bit of productivity ? It is still a frame less in the super ...

abeille: Iread somewhere that you would get more wt. out of a 9 frame than you would a 10 frame,I have never checked the wt.But it is easier when you uncap the frames with 9>>>>MARK

If you stick only 9 frames of undrawn Pierco in a box, you will have a bunch of left over space. Even with 10, there is a bunch of space so some guys use 10 in them. They arent as wide which can make for uncapping issues but the super average jumps up a few pounds over the long haul.

I do use 9 frames in supers I'm going to extract because they weigh about the same and are much eisier to extract.

The original question, though, I believe is concering 8 frame or 10 frame equipment. I don't think it was about how many frames you put in a box, but how many frames FIT in the boxes you use. Unless I misunderstood.

I used to have around 80 eight frame hives.I never noticed that there was anything superior about them(though the man I bought them from thought they were superior to 10 frame stuff).I eventually phased them out in favor of 10 frame equipment.

I have some 12 frame hives and use both 8 & 9 frames spacing in the supers. Prefer 8 frame spacing, nice huge fat combs

As of this year: 100% mediums (hurray!), 10 frame format (9 used in supers).

A lot of the old timers keep 8 frames here simply just to make lifting the boxes easier
