    I live in Lower Michigan and I have 2 hives now. They were my grandfathers for about 20 years now and we never had mites.(Knock on wood) Do I have to worry about mites in this part of the US? Because I want to expand.

    Yes. You do. You need to monitor for them to see if you need to do something. You need a plan on what to do when you do see them. I wouldn't just start treating, but I would definitely monitor for them. Learn to do a sugar roll or a sticky paper or uncap some capped drone brood.
