    for bees to cling together on the front bottom of the hive in the evenings?? one of my hives seems like it always has a double fist size of bees hanging in a triangle shape nearly to the ground in the evenings just in front of the opening. thanks,keith

    Yes, it's normal, at times. Check to be sure they have empty space in the hive and give them more ventilation if you want to reduce or eliminate it.

    It means that they're hot. Give them a screened- bottom board, and don't use a metal lid... they just suck up heat.

    Basically they have covered it. I try to increase ventilation (a SBB and prop the inner cover with some shims or a stick) and make sure there's enough super space. If you take care of that and they are still bearding, it's just the heat.

    Careful with the upper entrance this time of year. A new entrance at the top won't have guard bees, and fewer workers will be in the warehouse then are in the lower nursery, therefore leaving the hive open to robbers during a dearth.
    OK to do, just watch it closely the first few days.
