This question might have already been answered, i just putin 2 new hives, do I feed them both a gallon of sugar water a week? Or whats ideal, do I do this until they have established alot ofhoney.
My last years hive died, however that hive had arond 7 frames full of wax, I put those frames in both of the hives, will these 2 new colonies start out faster because of the wax already there?
You feed them if there is no flow on.
There is no "gallon a week" number as they vary alot, even hive to hive.
Packages will need more feed if they are on bare foundation. Use your drawn comb unless your bees died of AFB of course.
Why did last years bees die??
They died over the winter for lack of food, they only had about 10 pounds of honey going into winter and I didntknow u had to feed them over winter, each new hive I gave 4 frames with wax, no honey in them or anything.
I'd toss some 1:1 or 1:2 on and see if they take it. Using inverted 1 quart jars works fine.
Feeding in the fall is where they will build up if there is not enough honey. Winter feeding is emergency only in your climate as they can't put it away.
I like a strong 2 deeps, but I had some single deeps come through OK.
