Just curious, I have heard of gigantic super hives, requiring up to six hive bodies, any one ever have an extremely successful hive like that?

Hi,
Yes. Five hive bodies is average (3 broodnest, two supers). But up to 7 or 8 from time to time depending on the year. I don't like stacking that tall anymore as it is hard for me to take supers off in the 7th and 8th position when full. I harvest progressively nowadays via escape or brush depending on how fast I need to turn the equipment over.
Clay
Often. It's one of the reasons I've decided to try to run my hives more horizontally. It's a bear lifting even a shallow super that high.
