Entrance Reducer Use

I just hived my first two packages! I placed the entrance reducer at it's smallest opening for a couple of days, then to it's biggest opening. I did this because the bees looked "crowded" fighting their way in and out of the small hole. Just wondering, what would some of you experienced beekeepers say on how long to leave the reducer on before taking it off completely?

Reducing the size of the hive entrance is important when installing a new package of bees since it allows the new, smaller colony to adequately guard the entrance. However, an entrance reducer is not appropriate for a new hive if the package is installed in very hot weather.
