Default Cleaning white styrofoam top feeder

    Hello,

New member, first post. How do you clean a styrofoam top feeder. Lots of black mold and I'm afraid of cleaning solution getting into the foam.

I used a bleach solution while mine was in the house so I knew the bees would not be in it. After it soaked overnight, I dumped that out and refilled it with clean water and let it soak another 24 hrs. Seems fine with the bees now.

Thanks Ruth: I was not soaking for 24 hours but basically doing the same thing, rinsing with lots of fresh water after the bleach.

Vinegar also kills mold and mildew very well.

When my feeders come off for the year, I clean them up with bleach water and copious rinsing afterward, including one with vinegar afterward. I don't soak them in the bleaching solution for very long - an hour or so, max.

I find a vinegar-soak only mildly effective, so I use bleach instead. I figure bees love to drink from chlorinated swimming pools, so it must not put them off too much.

    Enj.
