I sometimes use a piece of matchlight charcol or one of those you buy for incence, when I'm going to using it for a while. Also, sometimes I do the fire thing with some twigs.

In my place we use cows manure. It has to be very dry and last long. That is what you want if you have to inspect lots of hives.

If I am only going to be in a hive for a short time, I use newspaper. It works great and gives out a white smoke.

Another that works pretty well is to cut a long strip of cardboard into widths small enough to roll up and fit in the smoker.
