    Combs are up and down? I would assume you mean vertical?

    As far as I know, hornets and wasps have horizontal(side to side) combs.

    Honeybees have vertical combs.

    OK, if you guys say so, they're horizontal. I've opened wasp nests in the past, unoccupied ones, of course and never noticed the orientation even though it was right there in front of me. Thanks for the info.
