Can any of you tell me about how many quarts of 2:1 sugar water it takes for the bees to fill a shallow super?
2 to 1 sugar is 33% water
honey is 18% water
Lets say honey is twice a concentrated as feed. The super hold 40lbs of honey. It should take 80lbs of feed to do it. 1 Pint = 1 pound
ergo 40 quarts. That's logic but somehow I think it would take more in practice.
5 gallons of 2-1 in each hive is plenty, with food left over in spring,on the darker bee, yellow takes more, but can feed in spring early. We feed ours ,in next 2 weeks, and there is still 3/4 super full in spring.Don't have ta worry bout starvin.Just heard up north plus some in Man,is already feeding.Saskatoon has been feeding since 8th of august. We sure are in a nice place here.
