    Hi All,
I set up a live chat room called the Bee Hive to discuss beekeeping, if anyone is interested in real time chat. Thought it might come in handy if anyone had a urgent question or just wanted to fellowship a bit. The link is: http://client.sigmachat.com/sc.pl?id=46568
It is open 24-7. One and all welcome.

I think a schedule would be a good idea; that way people with questions could join up and get immediate feedback (not that things are slow on this bulletin board!)

Could also be a fun way to get to know others on this board better.

Well cant be there all the time. lol

Yes a schedule sounds good. I had thought late afternoon, evening or night depending on where you are located would prolly work but I am open for suggestions.

    Cochran,
I appreciate the chatroom, but generally speaking, something called IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is what's used for real time chat. It also facilitates some other features like rudimentary file sharing and so on. My volunteer linux organization and I run and administer our own server which includes an irc service, and I would be more than happy to make such a thing possible.

Since you started the whole thing, I would make you one of the main chatroom adminsitrators as if this were your web based chat with sigmachat. I am just offering the ability to do more than type text to one another. Perhpas a sound file for another to review, or pictures that would otherwise not be able to be shared but someone wishes to have reviewed in realtime.

If you don't know what IRC is, then perhaps you might know the name of a piece of software called mIRC. Its the principle software offering used to connect to irc, and its shareware without obligation. It been around for many many years and quite a good piece of software. You can download it from www.mirc.com

If you are a linux user, well you don't need any help selecting an irc client as you already have your choice of probably 10 different clients on your installation CDs or know how to get one.

    Cochran, Please let me know.

    Scot,
I am familiar with IRC. I appreciate your offer but its not up to me. Makes no difference to me. If that's is preferable to everybody else, hey do it. I had just read several different posts about folks wanting a chat room and I had looked for one myself, didn't find anything but empties. Just came across Sigma and looked pretty simple.

Ok, let me create the room. Anyone can enter at any time whether someone is there or not. I don't care either whether its used or not just so long as we all get to chat with each other once in a while.

    server info is:
    irc.linuxfromscratch.org
    room is called #beekeeping

If anyone needs help connecting I will be more than happy to guide, just please use this thread as a continuous thread so we aren't flooding the board with IRC help requests.

nmist, I really like your site. Did you set that up? Does it cost you anything?

I started reading your messages and wondered if you painted your hive bodies before you put your bees in? Or did you soak em in wax or something. If not, what will you do when your frames start buckeling?

If there are any other folks out there who don't do windows, you can download IRC software for macs from www.ircle.com.

Yes you need to have a piece of software to use irc. irc is the 3rd oldest form of communication in networking, e-mail being the first and usenet (newsgroups) being 2nd.

    For Windows go to http://www.mirc.com
you can also try trillian which is an integrated communications package which supports e-mail, ICQ, AIM, MSN Messenger and IRC and a few other protocols.

for McIntosh 9.1 and less try http://www.ircle.com

For Mac OSX try either ircle above or try http://www.xchat.org http://www.*****x.org

for Linux and other unix flavors and variants try: http://www.xchat.org http://www.*****x.org http://www.irssi.org

Ok looks like one of the names of the irc software isn't friendly enough for the board filters. Though again if you have a system that can use this piece of software , then you probably already know it. I will leave them in place so people who don't know what I am talking about can see the urls with the ****** in their names. Just disregard them because again, if you don't know what it is, then it probably doesn't apply to you.

There are tons more available, but these seem to be the principle software offerings for some various systems.

I don't know how to do it. Do we go through the browser? Through the Mirc software? If so, where do I type in the channel?

    Hey guys,

How about we get together on the chat room tonight. Anytime after 5:00pm EST will be good for me.

Might want to wait until 9:00pm EST so more people will be home from work. I'll be checking this sight to get some feed back.
