Probably "super" as in placed atop or superimposed on the hive body. Also, super meaning the honey that the bees produce over and above what they need for the winter- thus superfluous.
Um, I think if you Really want to know where the term "super" came from, one has to dig deep into the trials and struggles of early modern apiculture. According to history, a number of successes were made in quite rapid succession. These included removable frames, wax foundation, wiring, extractors, uncappers, smokers, etc. It seems that there was just one major problem still left to be solved. "The proper design for the hive itself." One day, a prominent bee researcher was called to his work shop by a employee who pointed out that the frames, bottom boards, and inner and telescoping covers all seemed to fit perfectly to a simple wooden box. When the researcher saw this, he remarked "SUPER!"
And there you have it. Life is so simple at times.
Coyote
That's akin to the lost beekeeper trying to find his beeyard. Seemingly wondering for hours trying to find the allusive yard he stumbles across a native of the area and asks in a stative nature, "Werethefuquari?"
