top bar hives cold climates

I'm going into my 3rd year as a bee man, one of my winter projects is to build two top bar hives. I know they work well in warmer climates. Has anyone tried then in the great white north? I'm located up state N.Y. west of albany Thanks Dan

I'm in the same boat, but have no experience with TBH's yet, there's two in the basement though.

Hi, what are the demensions of the top bar hives you built ? Did you use plans or design your own. Thanks Dan

I have not overwintered a Top Bar Hive but I have overwintered some horizontal hives and they did fine. The main difference is that there isn't the communication at the top in the top bar hive because the combs block any movement from comb to comb at the top so movement of the cluster has to be at the sides and bottom.
