I want to start a Web page about my bees, keeping track of them and such and also include the rest of the farm.
I have noticed some of you have nice sites and was wondering if some would share with me who your web page is with.
Thanks,
Craig

Originally my page was just with my local provider. But I've since outgrown them in terms of file space and features. They didn't offer database support and other nice things that make maintaining a larger and constantly changing site much easier. But it's worth checking with your internet provider because, while I find it's not always automatically setup, many do provide some web space and bandwidth included with your internet service. Short of a website with your provider there are a lot of free webhosts out there. They often have small limits, but is good for a starting hobby website.
Then when you outgrow your site you can consider moving to a paid hosting company. My site is now on Lunarpages which offers a lot for a good price.

If you want the site to be a sort of journal, complete with images, try blogger. It's free and they host your images. Once you have looked around a little, check out Hello. It's software that dovetails with blogger so that you can easily upload and store your images. Very cool. It's all so easy that you will be up and running in no time.
Here's one of my Blogger blogs. This one is mostly text, but you get the idea. Bee news
Best,

For my greenhouse business I'm at Globat.com. They have given me good service and have decent prices. They're always running a special of some kind on their basic hosting package. You can often get it for $4.95 per month with a free domain registration and no setup fee. I think their regular price is about $7.95 per month. They have all the normal stuff -- unlimited email accounts, tons of space, tons of transfer bandwidth, etc.

Most any service provider that you hook up to the internet through offers some kind of home page/web site for their customers, usually free (included). These "home pages" are usually plenty sufficient to get something up and running. They'll invariably let you register a domain and host it for you, for an additional charge. Once you have a domain you can take it with you, wherever you decide to get your site hosted.
The thing to do is get started and put up something even if it's wrong. I've thrown together quite a few sites and helped work on some pretty sophisticated ones. Holler for free advice!

I looking at using a blog software with categories to organize all the various homesteading research. So far I'm thinking of using wordpress or tinderbox. I have no experience with either one! Anybody have any opinions?
edited to add: just noticed tinderbox us not free and for mac only... guess i'll try wordpress & keep looking.

Wordpress is okay, but I think movable type is better. There's defnitely a larger community of mt users out there that can help you out.
Your service provider is a great place to start because it's usually already included. Unfortunately the ones I've been at, while they have great service, have painfully small web space and lack any support for databases needed by CMS or blog software, though they often do have php. Plenty good for a small static website though. (I did run into one cmd that only needed php and used text files instead of a database. I believe it was guppy.)

I love visiting other Beeks pages. We have some pretty creative minds at work here. We use avehost.com (Web My Style). Have been with them for about 8 or 9 yrs. great support and good price @ 10.95/ mos. One mistake I made was using microsoft front page which is fraught with problems. I still use FP but have installed Qutepro FTP and upload using that format. Our sight isn't fancy but it has been very effective for us. Keep your pages simple and fast loading for best results. Let us know when your sight is up and we'll pay a visit. Good luck & have fun.
