Recently when helping a friend clean up his supers I noticed a white crystaline substance on the empty combs, the ones with honey did not have this on them. It was definitely not mold-what could it be?

No definitely not sugar crystals, this deposit is a little like a cottony crystal substance --softer than sugar but a lot grainier than any mold I have ever seen. Thanks for the idea anyway.I wonder if it could be some kind of excrement from a hive pest or parasite?
i have noticed the white things as well, i believe it is wax from cappings that are chewed from honey caps above, the wax falls down and into the cells.
Hope this helps
