Is 1" diameter I.D. tubing about right for the entrance tube of an observation hive? Mine will be about 15" in lenght and where it connects to the hive I was going to use a barbed fitting which has an I.D. of 3/4". I almost feel like I should use bigger diameter tubing.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

1" diameter is plenty big enough.
My observation hive tube may be smaller and does quite nicely.

Ours is one inch at the smallest point, it works fine! We used pvc pipe and connected the tube with one inch pvc - the flex tube is one and a quarter inch.

Mine is 1.5". Anything over 1/2" should be fine. You won't have a huge population in an OB hive.

My OB is 5 deep frames wide and 3 frames high with a total of 15 frames. It is in my Shop that will be heated all winter. I used 2" PVC pipe, an that still makes for a little congestion during the Golden Rod flow. I can add shallow 5 frame supers to the top of the hive for honey harvest. This hive has been going since April 10th.

I have a 1" ID tube that leads to the entrance.

Our 3 frame Observation has a 5/8" plastic pipe through a brick wall. There is some rush hour traffic jams during a honey flow - otherwise this diameter works fine.

    Mine is 1 1/4". I imagine 1" or even 5/8" would work.
