The back of Ken Schramm's book on mead lists honey sources for vairetal. Has anyone tasted some far out varietal honey and what did you think? For example, I do not need to know about clover, buckwheat, or cotton but do want to know about Macadamia nut, lehua, star thistle, etc...
I took off 45 pounds of honey last year in the early spring from a hive that was just building like mad. I was expecting it to be dandilion, but the taste was horrid. Examining the property a little closer, I noticed their was this massive patch of hawthorn in full bloom. The flowers smell like rotting meat and the honey tasted like Buckley's cough syrup. The bees didnt seem to mind, they were working it like mad.
What was truly funny though, is that I marketed it as a Medicinal honey for use in herbal teas to help with spring colds. It sold like hotcakes.
