Yellow Jacks-can someone help?

I have lots & lots of yellow jacks in my vicinity. My questions is do they live/breed in hives(which is what I always thought)? someone told me they also live in the ground-is someone pulling my leg?
I have hundreds of holes from something exisitng my old garden area but no sign of ants-this is what prompted the last "story"

If you go to the home page, www.beesource.com and then the search page and search on "yellow jackets" you'll find hundreds of discussions of bait, traps etc., not because this site is about yellow jackets but because they eat our bees.

Your buddy is not pulling your leg. Yellowjackets live both underground and will also make paper nests.
