Hi Joseph,
I live in N. New York in the Adirondack Mountains. Bees are creatures of the sun but they don't need excessive pampering. Just maximize the sun and they should bee fine.

More importantly, what's your winter temperature? Below about 50 Fahrenheit, they won't fly much; once it gets down to about 45 or so, they'll be forming the winter cluster. Sunlight's almost irrelevant under those conditions, except that when the temperature is marginal, they will be out flying quicker if the sun's on the hive. They always say that morning sun helps the bees, but if you can't put the hives where they will get it, it's not essential.

Our average winter temperature is about 50 degrees and no sun light. There is light just no bright sunny spots.
