Most of my hives seem to have wintered well but in two of them I found no queen,no eggs and no brood. I know my guess is something happened to the queens or they've swarmed already what are your thoughts? I did find a queen cell in one of them that appeared to have hatched (nicely cut out on the bottom). I put a frame of unsealed brood with eggs in each hive. My queens are clipped and marked at least they were last fall.
Doesn't anybody have any ideas on this? Did I do what I should have by adding the unsealed brood? Do you think they swarmed?

You probably made a good choice putting in unsealed brood but if you had no sealed brood you should probably put in some of that too, to help keep the numbers up.
I am a beginner so until I experience the same thing I wont know for sure.
Do bees usually swarm before the new queen emerges?

Its probably too early for them to swarm in Ny. I would place a new queen in the hive and see how it is accepted.
