Does the notch in an inner cover go up in the winter or go down? My bee books don't seem to agree!
If you put it down in the winter you get more cluster space at the top. If you put it up you get more space to absorb moisture. Take your pick. Either will work.
We always put the notch down in the winter time. It serves as the upper entrance. If the inner cover doesn't have a notch, we cut one.
Some inner covers have a space on both sides and some only have a space on the side with the notch. If you want a space on both sides, you can put popsicle sticks or any kind of spacer in the top to give it more space or you can put screen (#8 or #7 hardware cloth) on the hole and put an extra box on top for space and then the lid.

I place notch down. My inner covers have a space on both sides. I cut my own notch also. Unless its my plywood innercovers. Which you can see here:
