>Which is the best way to feed over the winter in the northwest? Syrup or w/grease patties, or both? And what is a good recipe for grease patties?
Need to make enough for 5 hives w/two brood boxes (deeps).
Grease patties are to help with the T-mites, not to feed. Syrup will be too cold in the winter as will anything, but dry sugar or candy, but they don't take much dry sugar or candy unless they are desperate.
I don't feed in the winter. I try to have enough stores before then.
I don't think it would hurt to leave grease patties on all winter and they will feed on them.1lb of shortning to about 5lbs of sugar mix together with a small amount of water so it forms a firm pattie.
I've put the last of my patties on for the season. When the majority of the wintering bees are out, they'll get some and then no more . I don't want to open boxes that deep into the nest area, after it gets cold.
