what happens when the field bees are caught in a sudden downpour? Do they make a bee-line to the hive or do they just hang out in a tree or something?

Yes and yes. If they are close they make a bee line. If they get caught out in it they will hide anwhere they can to keep from drowning or getting too cold. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

The bees are very good at predicting the weather. You'll see them out when it's cloudy and drizzly all day and the are working like crazy. On another day you'll see just a little overcast and not a bee is leaving and then there's a downpour and afterwards they are out working again.

Sometimes they are wrong, but they usually don't get too far away when the weather is about to change drasticaly.

In Beekeeping the only stupid question is the one not asked.

I was thinking of that very same question just a few days ago. You beat me to it.
