Hi! I'm brand new to this site. I have been interested in keeping bees and have just bought an old farm house with plenty of room. Where do I begin?? Can anyone suggest reading materials, web sites, groups, that I can start with? I live in NE PA, but I am not aware of any associations around here. Any direction you guys could give me I would greatly appreciate it. Keep in mind; I'm an absolute beginner, NO experience what-so-ever! Thanx
beesknees68, When I get back to the house tonight, I'll send info on Wayne Co. and state associations. Welcome aboard.
Most books are redundant for the most part. But reading a minimum of two will give you different perspectives. This website has several to choose from.
Please cosider a beginners coarse and/or be humble enough to make a friend with another beekeeper in the area. Swapping stories and having a person to reley on in a sticky situation can really boost confidence and you won't have to learn the hard way with every mistake. And that can get costly.
Read some books. Join a club. Find some beekeepers. Read this board and try to imagine if they were your bees. That sounds like a start. If you think you need to spend more money, send it to Coyote, or me.
I remember, at a local craft fair, asking a beekeeper selling honey, a few questions about beekeeping. He saw I was truly interested, and gave me this advice;
"Find someone who has been keeping bees for a long time, and do what he does. Some who have bees, do it wrong, and they will teach you their mistakes."

She can answer questions and take your info for state dues, etc. I think they are still $10.00 They put together a monthly newsletter with advertisments and happenings from around the state. Well worth it. Maybe I'll see you at next years state picnic. Good luck.
Thanks so much everyone!! Coyote & Mike; your $20 is in the mail
^ Thanks BjornBee for the info, Milford is REALLY close so I will be making some phone calls. Daisy, thanks too for the mite info, I never knew that bees could get mites :0?
>Daisy said: Mites are your first research project. Problems with mites take up more time and money then the bees will ever take.
Amen
