MORE DEAD BEES

I have one hive and this was my first winter. When I opened the hive, the bees were all dead. There was plenty of honey and the bees were in two separate clusters. There was feces smeared all over the inside walls. I have Italians, and most of the dead bees were dark brown. All my equipment is new yet the comb in the lower box was also dark brown. I don't know if that is significant. It is very wet where I live and I squeezed the hive between two evergreen plus wrapping it. I am zone 6 in Southeastern MA. Wonder if I contributed to this happening due to excess moisture. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!
