Reminant bees

I'm going to tranfer the bees that went back to the empty hive i left at the old yard site. I'm going to do the newspaper, add the runaway hive on top, Do you just put a top on them, and hope it works, or do you leave a top exit, there will be no brood comming? If i had any idea i was going to be typeing so much, i should have majored in english, i'm doing the best i can.

With a newspaper combine, they need stores or an exit, IMHO. I usually use two sheets of newspaper and slit it a couple of places with the hive tool. I usually use a top exit as well.
