Hive painting

Just purchased my first 2 hives and have assembled them. Now, when I paint the outsides, does that include the top/bottom edges where the boxes rest on each other?

What ever you figure works best. I usually dont bother.

At most I have painted 20 boxes at one time so I do paint the top and bottom edges. If I was to paint 50 or 100 at a time I wouldn't bother, it would take too much time.

When painting supers, Roger Morse, in his book, "The New Complete Guide to Beekeeping", on page 30, suggest "Placing some paint in the rabbets or frame rest will usually deter the bees from depositing too much propolis at that point for a year or two." He also says to paint the top and bottom rims and the outsides of supers.

I didn't bother to paint the last batch. I haven't painted the edges on a hive in 30 years. I started painting them with nuetral base so I could see the wood last year.

I think you worry too much.

If you want to do everything possible, paint the outside and the edges (where the boxes meet). Paint the bottom board all over and paint the top of the inner cover.
