I use #8 hardware cloth. Any smaller and I've been told they will fill it in with propalis. I was speaking to Chris Werner from Indian Summer when they came to speak at our spring association meeting and they use 1/4" hardware cloth (~1800 hives). He said you need to be careful when you pick them up with a forklift because sometimes there are a lot of bees under there. I guess they hang out on bottom instead of on the front porch. Also, if you do pollination you need to remember they can get out of the 1/4" stuff. They would just love you at the 7/11 when you stop to get gas.

#8 is readily available. #7 will work also, but is harder to find. #5 or smaller the bees can get through. #5 is usually used for pollen traps because they will lose their pollen squeezing through. #4 will let the bees through but not the mice.

    Mine are all #8.
