YESTERDAY! It was fairly warm--high fifties here, but kinda windy. I was standing at the kitchen sink talking to my husband and we heard this "bonk" and looked around, and it was a honeybee. It backed up and looked all around at the window like "WHY did that not work?" and then bonked it a couple of times more and then flew around the house looking at the eaves.

I thought it was a little early for swarms, but I have the feeling this might be a scout bee out looking for a new home.

I have no bees yet. My first packages will be here in april. I'm going this week to Kelley's to buy equipment. This made me wish I had a box and a swarm trap.

It's been a cold February here. Isn't it too early?

I'm south of you, but we have similar weather...

I keep 6 of my hives here at the house year round, and they get more attention, and are better cared for, than my others, and 3 of the 6 will be swarming in about 2 weeks unless I do something...COME ON SPRING!!!

My girlfriend was walking the dog past the local church yesterday. There's a feral hive in the walls about 40 feet up, and the temp. was in the low 50's. As she walked past, two bees came down, hovered right in front of her for a few seconds and then left.

The only thing I can figure is they were checking out her neon green sweatshirt, since it's the only brightly colored thing around right now.

And today it's 26 with gusts of wind over 25 mph. sigh

Brewed 10 gallons yesterday and had several visitors... beautiful sunny day, only somewhat windy. Do bees smell? Brewing sure seems to bring them outta the woodwork...

Or her perfume. Bees love smells.
