Hi, I have an opportunity to help with a harvest this fall, but need a protective suit. I'm really looking forward to learning!
I'm a big lad, 48 inch waist, 6'2. I want something durable but (of course) relatively inexpensive.
Can anyone recommend a suit, and a supplier, that would be good for a newbie? Guess I'll also need a smoker...
Topic: new jackets with veils, 100% cotton = $34 http://www.beesource.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000075.html
You can also buy them from Brushy Mt. http://www.beeequipment.com/search.asp , Mann Lake http://www.mannlakeltd.com/catalog/page41.htm , Beeworks http://www.beeworks.com/U.S.A.htm etc. The nylon coveralls from Mann lake have a hood that flops back out of the way and don't require a helmet. The jackets from Mann Lake only come in cotton, but you can buy the jackets or the suits from the beeworks in nylon or cotton with the hood. I like the nylon with the hood. I also like the jacket. On a hot day you find yourself often taking the suit off to cool off and it's much easier to take the jacket on and off than the coveralls. Unless you are going to do some serious work on a very viscious hive the jacket is more than enough. The ones from Alejandro above are only $34 (a real bargin) and seem quite popular with those who have bought them, but it requires a helmet or some kind of hat with a stiff brim to hold the veil out.
Well, I do have a vicious hive and don't work them without the whole get-up. I bought the plain coveralls with the zippered veil from Dadant. Think it was around 60 dollars or so. I've been very happy with it, but it does get rather hot in the middle of August.
I ordered my husband's (he is 6ft- 6in. and weighs 300lbs. @ Brushy Mt. in Moravian Falls, NC. It's a 4X-large and xx gloves,
