Starting out

This spring I will get two hives from a friend.

As far as I know, these hives haven't been requeened in one to three years. Also, he is using only one box for brood.

What I need to know (among other things) is:
1. Should I be concerned with requeening either this year or next?
2. Should I add another brood box?

I would probably do both. I'd probably requeen and add a brood box.
