    reply:

Nuc is short for nucleous. It is the core of a hive. Kind of like a starter kit or mini hive. Nucs can have different functions. They can be used for mating queens, increase, overwintering, requeening, ect. It is not the box they are in but the contents.

Well, somtimes it's the box and sometimes it's not. Just like a hive is the box and it's not. A nuc box is usually four to six frames with five being the most common. And as stated is used sometimes to start a new hive, sometimes to raise queen cells, and sometimes to mate queens. Sometimes they are sold as the basis for a new hive.
