I've read in the past about alternatives to commercial bought sticky boards. I was thinking crisco on a piece of cardboard, but then I think of ants. Anyone with a low cost solution/approach? Thank you.

I know of one fellow that uses Tanglefoot that you put on tree trunks to control insects. Dale
Vaseline on a sheet of plastic is popular.
How crucial is the stickiness of the stuff? Will the mites walk all the way up along the walls if the bottom is not sticky with vaseline or something? The stickiness makes a real mess because you don't just get the mites to drop. EVERYTHING drops: pollen, wax, poop, mites, shreds from the cotton cords, ants, etc.
I started with FGMO wiped over a piece of plastic, but I rather leave it dry. Then again, everybody mentions "sticky" for some reason I suppose.
