I built a screened bottom board using the plans on this web site. Should the panel be removed during the summer months?

I keep mine open all spring, summer, and fall. I've heard that alot of people keep them open year around. I don't know if I'm going to do that yet.

We have had temps in the 90s last week and this one too. I haven't seen the first beard on the front of my hives.

If the weather is cool, and the hive is weak, it may be better to have greased boards under the screen even in spring and fall, so the cluster doesn't have to work hard to stay warm and the brood doesnt chill. For strong hives, where the winters are mild, open is fine, but in extreme cold, I dont see how the cluster could stay warm.
