Anyone have an opinion of the best type of bees for NW Arkansas? Also any comments on reputable suppliers would be great. I'm planning on starting a few hives from scrath in the spring. Any advice?
Most beekeepers start with Apis mellifera ligustica, the "three banded Italian". This race is very plentiful and very available from many sources. Suggestions - start with a good book about bees. There are many good books to choose from, "BEEKEEPING, A Practical Guide" by Richard E. Bonney was very helpful to me. Try contacting the state beekeepers association or the local beekeepers association, they may be able to hook you up with a beekeeper and mentor that can provide where the local s get there bees. Good luck and have fun.
