Re: ordering supplies and long wait times...

There are a lot of beekeepers ordering at this time of the year. Plan ahead and order during the off season and you get your order in a couple of days.

a day with rain or late afternoon for me.
  3. Re: Pay your state bee fees! I was a fugitive from justice

I sent an email to our state bee inspector and it took her 9 months to reply. I asked her what took so long and she said she is just that busy. I asked how the hives she was inspecting looked and she...

    Re: thinking ahead for expansion

Add it! there is no great risk to adding extra supers during a honey flow. I use shallow suppers and I will sometimes add three empty supers on a strong hive at a time. In fact I frequently do this....

Re: How do you mark your hives?

I use cattle ear tags. Very tough rubber, yellow tag with black number. I hold them on the back of the hive with a 1" drywall nail. You can get them at any farm supply store. This is how I number...
  6. Re: How did your bees winter around Ohio Indiana or Michigan

So far so good 26 hives and all alive at this point. Two hives are very weak and may not have queens because there are very few bees, less than two frames in each hive. I am going to check hives a...

    Re: upper entrance?

Last year I ran a 4" top entrance and the full bottom entrance until after the main honey flow. I figured that's when robbing season would start so I put the entrance reducer in the bottom and left...

Re: When Will You Start Nucs And Splits

I don't go by a date as much as sign. I do my splits when the apple trees start blooming.

The temp in Southern Indiana jumped up to 57 today. I checked my 26 hives and so far no losses. However I have one hive that may have less than two cups of bees and another that is down to about two...

    so far all is well

I opened all 25 hives last week and so far all hives are doing well. 2 hives are down to about 3 deep frames of bees but still have plenty of stores. A pollen cake in mid Feb. should help get those...

Re: Corregated plastic for hive beetles?

No I do not plug either side. When removing the pcs to put in water you must be fast, no time for lollygagging.
I was given a hive last year that had been left on a friends farm (the original owner...

Re: Corregated plastic for hive beetles?

I also use the plastic signboard without the chemicals. I lay the strips of signboard (2" x 6") on top of the frames of my top super. I take a 1 gal bucket of water and as soon as I open the hive I...

    Re: Feeding HFCS

HFCS is a little cheaper and no mixing. I found HFCS for .47 per lb. I am sure if you shopped it close you could get a better price than that.

    Re: extracting problem

No brassica's for sure. And don't know of any Canola.

By the way I am sure that this is this years honey because I had no supers on through the winter and I did not feed back any honey.
