Re: Keeping Snow off of Buried Hives

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if they needed to be able to have fresh air circulating, or if it was OK for them to be totally under the snow.

When we shovel, we have only been clearing the...

Keeping Snow off of Buried Hives

Here in Atlantic Canada, we're having quite the snowy winter. My two hives (one is on an 18" high stand) are completely buried. We try to keep them dug-out, but it just keeps snowing & if it's not...

    Re: Can Someone Mentor Me?

So, my original hive was robbing the nuc like *crazy* today. I think they got the queen (thought I'm not sure--I couldn't find her & there was a pile of bees on the ground in the grass under the...

    Re: Can Someone Mentor Me?

How do I combine two hives if I can't get one of the queens? I'd like to add the bees in the nuc to the bees in the original hive

    Yesterday, I inspected & here's what I found:
    nuc:
    not a lot of...

    Re: Can Someone Mentor Me?

Today, my husband built me a topfeeder. I'm hoping to put it on tomorrow.

What concentration is recommended for syrup?

Also, since I only currently have one & am low on frames to add any...

    Re: Can Someone Mentor Me?

I know the bees need more room: I do not have the equipment I need right now, and my local supplier is closed for another 10 days, so we're building what we can in the meantime--I was not...

    Re: Can Someone Mentor Me?

Thank you so much for replying!!

    I have 2 hives & a makeshift nuc box. They're 10 frame, mediums.

I don't have exact numbers for the next questions, but I'll do my best guess:
    My first hive...

    Can Someone Mentor Me?

My bees keep swarming, I don't know where to put them, or how to best help them make it through the winter & I have no one IRL to help me.

This time last week, I had one colony that I got as a nuc...
  10. Re: Caught a Swarm, no Extra Hive, now what?

They are still there today! They're flying about.
  11. Re: Caught a Swarm, no Extra Hive, now what?

They're still in there, but it's SO quiet! There are no bees flying, no bees at the entrance, etc.

But if I look in, I can see that they're all over the frame of brood I put in & under the cover....
  12. Re: Caught a Swarm, no Extra Hive, now what?

Is it probable that they will just want to leave because the nuc box isn't big enough for them?

We're traveling out of province tomorrow & I plan to stop by a beekeeping store & pick up a hive for...
  13. Caught a Swarm, no Extra Hive, now what?

So, I'm *brand* new at this.

I have had a nuc for just about 2 months. They seem very strong and healthy & are drawing comb well--they're starting on their 3rd medium hive body.

    However, they...
  14. Re: 3 Week old Nuc & Queen out of the Hive!

Yes, Hawkster, that's what I think, too, now that I thought about it for a while.

Harley Craig, she laid several eggs in the jar, maybe 10 or so. She was only in there for like maybe 5 minutes. ...
  15. 3 Week old Nuc & Queen out of the Hive!

I got a nuc 3 weeks ago & have been checking on the bees weekly.

Last week (well, about 10 days ago), they had drawn 1 side of 2 frames, so not a lot (they came on 5 medium frames & I had 5 empty...
  16. Newbie--Converting Nuc to Small Cell Mediums & How Many Frames do I need?

I am planning to use all medium boxes & eventually go foundationless. However, I have ordered a nuc from our local supplier (and can't get anything different this late in the season).

    So, what do...

    Hello from New Brunswick, Canada

    Hi!

I'm so glad to have found this forum (er, mostly....I've been spending way too much time on here, though!)

I have ordered my first nuc for this spring & have spent the past few weeks...
