Re: Spring combine - Summer split method

    Michael
When would you suggest starting the nuc's to overwinter? I installed four packages into two off your 2x10 long hives, and into two 3x10 long hives. Would you make nuc's out of these the...
  3. Re: Conventional Langstroth Frames in Top Bar Hive

Search for Long Lang. There are plenty of threads with a lot of info on this site. I have 2-TBH's, 2-warre's, and 4-long langs. They are all learning lessons with unique advantages and lessons. Long...

    abandoned hives ?

Just curious about the legalities and ethics of abandoned hives. I know of two yards that haven't seen a beekeeper in two years. They are falling apart due to neglect. Some have fallen over, some...

Re: My TBH and Some Questions.

If your original bottom is hinged, a screen will work. Remember you also have to cut of all your divider boards. They will fit a new solid floor better.
  6. Re: such a slowwwww colllllld start this spring :(

On the negative side 13deg. night before last, positive side I saw a dandelion yesterday. Yay. Amazing how something so small can be so exciting.

Re: keeping a package in the house for 2 days?

I was forced (due to weather) to keep 7 pkg's in my shop (60 deg.) for a week. They had been in the box for a total of 9 days. I refilled the cans when needed. And lightly sprayed them with syrup...

    Re: Long/Horizontal Deep Langs questions?

I basically made a stationary divider bd. that has vertical slots router'd into it to correspond to the space at the end of the bars. I also wanted to be able to close it off to divide the hive, so I...

    Re: How's your spring????

Doesn't appear that we will have a spring this year. Snowed everyday for the past week. Lows around 14deg., highs in the low 30's. Packages sitting around all over the house waiting for Friday....

Re: My TBH and Some Questions.

I made a couple of TBH that were a little to deep so I just beveled a couple of pieces of plywood and dropped them into the hives and created false bottoms. I live in the mountains of Montana and...
  11. Re: How many times have you been stung? By the same Bee!

Michael - You need to hang out with a different crowd. Lawyer's can sting multiple times also.

    Re: Long/Horizontal Deep Langs questions?

I have built 4 long langs this winter and will be installing packages into them tomorrow. Since these obviously aren't going to be moved I use 2" lumber for the sides, 3/8" plywood for the bottom and...
  13. Re: Making horizontal hives with langstroth frames

I think one of the key's with a horizontal configuration is length. You can't make it to long as you use followers to define the space needed at any given time. But to short can be a real issue. I...
  14. Re: Making horizontal hives with langstroth frames

I'm currently building 4 long hives. Two are patterned after Matt Davey's two queen hives. The other two are three boxes long but the individual areas are square. I can run the frames either...

    End bar dimensions?

Just curious about why the gap between frames (at the bottom end) is 1/4" if optimum bee space is 3/8".

Re: port orford cedar or yellow cedar hives

I reclaimed a 1200+ sf deck. So I have around 2800 lf of 1 x 6. Not suitable for alot of things because of the weathering and the screw holes on 24" ctrs. Perfect to build a few hives. Since you have...

Re: Carrying a few queens on airplane

i just asked my wife the TSA agent. No problem as far as TSA is concerned. It's no different than dogs, cats, gold fish, sugar gliders, etc. All of which come through on a daily basis. The problem...

    Re: vertical vs. horizontal movement

I started two TBH last year with 4# carniolan pkg's on April 15th. Brand new hives, so no comb whatsoever. September 1st i had 13 full bars in one hive and 11 full bars in the other. At about 5#/bar...

Re: Carrying a few queens on airplane

I wonder how the dim bulbs of the tsa would react to that??
I take offense to your comment. My wife is a TSA agent. She and most others work their tail off to keep us safe. Don't judge the whole...

    Re: Montana top bar beekeeper

Hey, We seem to be in the minority. I started last year with two top bars and two warre's. Down to one top bar now but it is doing great. Not many top bar people in Montana. I'm going to do some...

port orford cedar or yellow cedar hives

Anyone out there ever use port orford or yellow cedar for hives. It gives off a strange odor when cut and might be offensive to the bee's. I have a large supply of boards and it is very weather...

Re: Two queen hive and different breeds

Is there any advantage to doing this set up with two new packages? Both carnies. Would a person be better off with just installing in two hives? Thinking about strength for next winter. Not worried...
