    Re: Roman Beekeeper's Signet Ring

The stone looks to be jade. You might even find that you do not legally own the ring, Rome might try to claim it! jk

With the carving of the bee on it I would guess it to be worth a lot more than...

Re: Opinions Appreciated - Is the stealing???

How close are you to Michigan? ;=P

A friend of mine cleans forclosed houses for a local credit union, everything she does not want goes to the trash. She once gave away 30 hives full of bees and I...
  4. Re: thinking about keeping bees. hard to decide what type of method

Make friends with a good local bee keeper and ask him or her to mentor you. Use what ever type of equipment and such that he or she uses until you are comfertable with your skills as a beek.

Re: Wintering - anyone do nothing to the hive?

I bought a hive here in Michigan that had not been touched in 3 years, it was very strong. It is not what I do, but it worked.

I know why Monsanto wants our bees dead!

They work for free, that does not fit with the company model.

My guess is they are trying to develop vegies that are self pollenating, they will own 100% of the new crops and will rule the world...

    Re: Bees in downed tree

Do what Honeyman said and keep them somewhere no wind will hit em, if you have a root celler or cold basement they wont eat as much. The size of the hive should give some indication of how likely...

    Re: Late Season Combination?

Be careful to make sure they combine before it's too cold. The colder it is the slower they move, if it takes too long they might freeze out before they eat through the paper and combine.

    Re: Hypothetical question

I split 3 spring hives into 9, then the nine summer hives into 22 late season splits. 7 or 8 are real strong, 7 or 8 are real weak, I expect all to make it through the winter inside a shed heated to...
  11. Re: Undecided about hive top ventilation for winter

Yes, I painted my wall on the outside of my shed with Green and Blue markings to help the bees find home, and used different colored roofs. 21 holes in the wall even confuses me! :s

    All the data is here:

Temp inside and out the hive is given as well as food consumption. I have just set up 21 hives just like this in a shed, I am...
  14. Re: Undecided about hive top ventilation for winter

I was refering to what bees evolved to live in, trees, not what they find. Their reactions are from millions of years living in trees not under our eves for the past few thousand years. So bees have...
  15. Re: Undecided about hive top ventilation for winter

The fact that bees in the wild do not prefer locations with top entrances does not necessarily mean they are not needed in a man made hive. Water condensates on the inside of the top cover because...

    Re: moving hive 10 yards

I just lay a branch or something on the landing pad and they seem to re-orientate just fine. They say the trick is to make a big enough change to their entrance and they will re-orientate.

  18. Re: North American Union has Arrived: First Official Mexican Shipping Truck to Cross.

The problem is their trucks are in serious disrepair, many have brake pads that were removed from trucks here as being too wore, a common practice. They have been "crossing" to Canada for years with...
  19. Re: Newbee mess up? Weak hive with winter coming!

I have a friend that has combined hives in the fall for 40 years and never removes queens. I was amazed when she told me she has never ended up with a queenless hive. She also claims the hive will...

Re: New Beekeeper Over Wintering In Singles
