Re: Moving down into the next box

Finally a reasonable explaination. Makes total sense. Thanks Ricky.
  2. Re: Simplified Inch Dimensions & Using As Bait Hive

I think that part of the warre way is the area of the box, so using taller lumber would have no effect. Also the height would not make a box incompatible with standard warre boxes. I'll convert my...
  3. Re: What fabric should I buy for both quilt and hive cover and how big should I cut i

Coffee shops will frequently give you the perfect burlap. They buy the beans in burlap bags.
  4. Re: How can you make Warre top bars without a table saw?

I don't use frames but it seems to me you could cut 1/4 plywood into 1/2 strips pretty easily with any hand saw then just glue them in to a frame shape. The frame would be really strong. Lowes sells...

Re: Moving down into the next box

I love concept but I worry that the stamped foundation is drone sized. I think I'm going to tire it but put the ladder on the edges where the bees would normally do the drone cells.

Re: Making your own sugar syrup

Actually its unlikely you will see cane or beet sugar (sucrose C12H24O12) in your sugar bowl. In this country the "sugar" we use is corn based (furcose C6H12O6). I've read that bees prefer the...

    Re: young newbee

BC is ASSUME. Had a client buy Kitsault so I got to briefly visit and it was just breath takingly beautiful. The problem you're going to have is the amount of rain and the depth of snow. A lot of...

Re: Making your own sugar syrup

I'm trying to use brown sugar. The bees don't seem to like it. Anyone have any luck or have any advise?

    Re: Perone Hive Plans Anyone?

Dam! I though I had tried every different type of hive, but suddenly I feel the need to switch to Perone hives. My bees are eventually going to get tired of my indecision.

    Re: Warre Winter and Honey

The population doesn't start to rise until there is some nectar flowing, so they won't need any extra room. They may have spend a bunch of effort getting the box sealed up and you wouldn't want to...

Re: Moving down into the next box

I'm lost. Do the ladders hang in the lower empty box?

    Re: Warré Woodworking

Its amazing how many things I do to produce food are illegal. Can't drink rain water. Can't plant fruit trees. Can't raise rabbits for food. Can't raise chickens for any reason. Can't raise tilapia...

    Re: Warré Woodworking

Dampening works with the gorilla glue, but you have to be careful. The gorilla glue expands and can push the joints apart if you use to much. Titebond Type II or Type III is what I use. They are both...

Re: my first problem with warré beekeeping

They're very handy to have around but you end up having to share your beer. They were very suspicious of the honey I gave them. Never seem the stuff before, but once they figured out what it was they...

Re: my first problem with warré beekeeping

I don't mess with them. They're on their own. but .... I've got a group of friendly old winos that sit on the porch across the street. They come get me when the bees swarm. Catching swarms makes up...

    Re: Warre Winter and Honey

I love the idea of leaving them alone all summer. Plenty of time to get sealed up and ready for winter.
  18. Re: Using a boardman entrance feeder as a top feeder in a Warré

I'd love to see a picture. I modified my bottom entrance so that the boardman feeder opens internal but is still on the bottom. (https://www.box.com/s/ac8956ebc0130cedcade) but I still have to mess...

Re: my first problem with warré beekeeping

Its not legal here but dealing with boxes instead of frames really works. I open my bees twice a year and am giving away hives to all my fellow bee keepers that can't keep their hives alive. I think...

Re: Hungry Hungry Hip....I mean bees

I'd be really careful about feeding in the winter. Opening the hive unseals everything the bees have sealed up. Also you run the risk of tricking the hive into thinking its spring. Did that to a hive...

    Re: Warré Woodworking

I have never had a problem (and I do a lot of gluing). I think that acetone will chase your bees away. Cedar is really porous so you have to be careful to use enough glue. I normally apply glue to...

    Re: Mouse Guards

I keep thinking that the hives being higher up would solve a lot of problems. Keep the mice out, keep the hive beetles out. make is harder for the mites to crawl back in after they fall out. Ants,...

Re: Moving down into the next box

Seems like the moving down is the major topic of concern in the Warre world. Its weird that Mr. Warre didn't address the problem in his book
  24. Re: Adding a super as well as nadiring a new brood box

I wonder if there is a reluctance to move to the bottom. I have had good luck with the whole moving down thing when I add several boxes at once.
