    Re: Early Spring Aggression

I was popped yesterday just to the outside of my right eye. Never had a sting hurt and swell like this one. I was about fifty yards from my hives (minding my business), also prepping my garden. One...

    Re: Carniolan Queens

The service at Honey Run is excellent, or was for me. But, my favorite Carni's came from Ebert Queens in Iowa.
  5. Re: What happened to all the nasty mean bees?

You are welcome to any mean queens that I may come across. I had to re-queen a hive last year. They would be head butting you fifty yards away. Pop the lid on them and it was instant black-out on...

    Re: March hive check

The bright orange cells in the last couple of pictures just look like pollen stores to me. The close-up of the white one almost looks like dead larvae that hasn't been removed. Not sure why it would...

    Re: l) Harvesting first honey

All of my hives consist of double deeps. If the bees build up enough to draw comb on both deeps then I add a super (shallow or medium). I only remove, for my use, the honey frames in the supers. I do...

Re: m) Preparing hive for first winter

    Do I need to Feed?

Feed if their honey/syrup stores are light. My fall hive checks consist of throwing syrup at them as fast as they can take it, provided they have room. Any excess I can always...

Re: Am I the only one?

It's the new generation (x, y, or whatever we are on now). It bothers me the most to see it on job applications. And, I am actually talking about professional career applications. Shame on any...

    Re: First Nuc Box Build

Looks like you are well on your way with making woodenware. Good Job! Don't forget to paint the cut edges to preserve them.

I like prizes. Count me in too.
  12. Re: What could the bees be bringing into the hive this time of year?

I watched mine bringing in bright and dull yellow pollen today. I have a couple of large maples in my front yard already blooming.

    Re: Dead hives

I had the same thing happen to me last year. I stuck the deeps, including all frames, into a deep freezer for at least a week, probably longer. I wanted to make sure that all the hive beetles/other...
  14. Re: How do I determine what kind of bee I have?

    I'm guessing Italian as well.
  15. Re: First time beekeeper - East Tennessee

Welcome from just down the road (Interstate). I would begin with a veil & suit. Getting stung will probably take the fun out of it for you. Dig through the endless posts on this site (a lot of...

    Re: Installing new queen

Make sure that you are positive that they have not already made/started making a new queen. If so they will kill your new queen. Two weeks queenless they usually would have made a new one.

Re: What type of bee is this?

The first picture looks like a honeybee with an abdomen full of nectar. Not sure about the second pic because its blurred. JMO. How big are those flowers? That may give a little more reference.

Re: Wanted to buy: One Queen

Ebert Queens (Iowa) and Honey Run Apiaries (Ohio) is two that I have had good dealings with and they are fast shippers. They both have websites and my one day shipping was about twenty bucks.

Re: Need help identifying a bee

I have had some just like that inside one of my hives. It was a hive that swarmed and I first saw two of these inside after the swarm cells were being torn down. I first thought that it was virgin...
  24. Re: When do I plant sweet clover for my bees?

I've yet to see any honeybees working red clover around my place. I have heard that their tongues are not long enough to reach the nectar. Not sure if thats true or not. Any of the whites are good in...
  25. Re: When do I plant sweet clover for my bees?

I've always planted in late winter. Clover seed is hard shelled and will be dormant until its ready to sprout. Some farmers actually mix it in with their cattle feed and let the cows spread it. I...
