  3. Re: Packages Aren't Arriving Until Early June!

First frost has been as early as October 1...speaking of drawn comb, all three hives are loaded with comb with quite a bit of honey...

In addition to everyone's suggestions (thanks, BTW) let's...
  4. Packages Aren't Arriving Until Early June!

My 3 packages aren't scheduled for pick up until June 2nd. This is about 6 wks later than usual.

Given that I live in the White Mountains of NH and our summers can be quite short, will this give...

    Re: Winter Kill Already

You mean like house flies on a warm winter day?
Pretty sure these girls are D-E-A-D...gonner. No food, sub-zero temps, I know I'd be dead under those conditions...:)

    Besides, financially, the...

    Re: Winter Kill Already

I have the same question: Since I'm going to have to start over with (3) new packages in April, how much housekeeping should I do to prep the frames for the new girls?

    These were Italians.
This is my second winter as a beek, last winter they did fine up until the end of...

Just getting around to posting this, since the news is kind of depressing...

Went out to add the sugar and found nothing but dead bees in the other hive.
I have not opened up the hive to look at...

No. Three supers on the remaining hive, only two on the one I lost...the one I lost was also new this spring.

    Winter Kill Already

After our first big snow storm last night, I went out to clear the entrance of my two hives.
Afterward, I put my ear to each and gave a knock...one replied with a healthy amount of buzzing...the...

    No (he says sheepishly...).
What I did do, was check the bees during my normal routine inspections...didn't notice any, but I guess I didn't look close enough.

Guess what? I will this year!

They seemed fine...but population was down by 60-70%...I did not look closely for mites, so can't say for sure if they were widespread.
