Re: painting supers with bees inside

I agree with GMCharlie 100%. You'll glue your boxes together. It's hard to overstate what a pain it will be to get them apart. You'll likely damage them in the process too.

    Re: Trap outs and pricing

I haven't had anyone get serious about wanting the service yet. I've probably probably been called about a dozen bee trees over the past couple years. As soon as they realize it costs to get them out...

Re: Split my colony, but is it failing?

I concur with the others here. Sounds like you didn't shake in enough nurse bees to keep the brood nest covered and warm. The emerging drones likely got chilled and died.

    Re: Feeding dry Sugar;

I kept dry sugar on all 6 of my hives this winter. All 6 came through strong.
  5. Re: Whether or not to continue trimming PF-120 frames.

I believe. It's not necessary to spend money on foundation. Here's the jig I made in one afternoon. Milling down end bars...
  6. Re: Received conflicting advice on going treatment free

Three pounds is what I would consider the lower limit. You should be fine though as long as they are a healthy package.
  7. Re: Received conflicting advice on going treatment free

You're expectations are spot on. Make sure your hive is perfectly level and cut your frame's end bars down to 1 1/4" and you will have a good year. Also, be sure to keep enough sugar on your newly...

    Re: 2nd year established hive?

To put the drawn out medium depth comb into your deeps you need to simply cut the comb out of the medium frames and rubber band it into the deep frames. Don't do this when the comb is cold and...
  9. Re: Received conflicting advice on going treatment free

After reading every book in my public library system cover to cover, buying some others and spending a lot of time here I concluded the most agreeable approach to me was treatment-free and...

    Wax melt in progress...

    Hi,
I read up on BeeSource earlier this week about ways to melt wax. Since I haven't built my solar melter yet I decided using the double boiler method would be the way to go for now. Here's what...

Re: Is lots of uncapped honey normal?

Good find, Keefis! #1 makes a lot of sense! I'll have to try it just to see. Sure beats dropping $360 on a gadget.

Re: Is lots of uncapped honey normal?

It doesn't have to be capped. As long as the hygrometer says it's got the right moisture level you can pull the frames and process it worry free. But those things are not cheap. And I have no clubs...

Re: Is lots of uncapped honey normal?

Thanks Keefis! I do foundationless. So I've been putting on boxes of empty frames this whole time and they're drawing out all the comb.

But perhaps they are kindly leaving the caps off to save me...

Re: Is lots of uncapped honey normal?

It has been extremely dry and hot here lately. Temps in the 98-107 degrees with no rain over the past couple weeks. In the month before that it was hot as well but definitely not extremely wet. Maybe...

Is lots of uncapped honey normal?

I've got a hive with about 4 boxes of mostly uncapped honey. Most of my 6 hives are like this. I've been doing hive inspections every other week for the past two months figuring surely I'd have tons...
  17. Re: What's the best gritty non-slip coating for ladder rungs?

Thanks for the offer, Acebird. I wear size 10 shoes.
  18. Re: What's the best gritty non-slip coating for ladder rungs?

Hi Acebird, I hadn't thought about roofing shoes. I'll have to consider that. Especially since some of my jobs are up on roofs.
  19. Re: What's the best gritty non-slip coating for ladder rungs?

The Herculiner is what I had in mind. Thanks Rader Sidetrack. But the Wing Walk product looks fantastic too! Maybe even better. From reading the product description says it remains somewhat soft...

Thanks Ben Franklin! That's what I'm looking for. Do you remember the name of the product.you used ?
  21. What's the best gritty non-slip coating for ladder rungs?

I do cutouts and the rungs of my ladders get crazy slippery when they get honey all over them. Do you guys/gals have any suggestions for something I can apply to the rungs of my ladders so I'll have...
  22. Hives hotter than every after a bad rain storm

    Hi All,
This past Tuesday we had a super windy rain storm. About a full inch of rain fell in roughly 1hr. The wind knocked over a dead tree near my hives and the tree actually fell right on top of...

What to do with all this cutout honey?

I rubber banded the brood comb into foundationless frames but I ended up with 2/3 of a 5 gallon bucket of nothing but honeycomb and some dead and alive honeybees that ended up in there. I know for a...

    Inner cover question

I'm just curious, is there any reason for the racetrack shape of most inner cover center holes? How about the size in general of the hole? Would a 2" hole with a hole-saw be just fine? Or are there...
