  1. Re: I need some pointers on foundationless frames

Same here as FKBEEK, I just came in from putting extra boxes on, I just put one drawn foundationless in the middle, it doesn't have to be fully drawn, been doing it that way for six years on about...

Re: Just don't know what to buy

Everyone has the right to use the type equipment they think best, but why all the talk about the weight of the boxes, most state regulations require moveable frames, I haven't heard of any requiring...

Re: Just don't know what to buy

I use deeps mostly because I'm cheap, I don't like to spend money I don't have to spend, it may be true that the more vertical configuration of eight frame is better ( or maybe not ) I would suspect...

Re: Not clear why colony died

I couldn't see the cell contents very well except to note a lot of pollen. The presence of ample pollen and a lot of stores indicate to me a strong colony that lost a queen and was unable to raise...

Re: Need Help! Just Inhereted 50 hives

Sounds like you are overwhelmed to say the least. I've been in that situation too. What helped me was to make a list and then arrange the list in order of priority, maybe number 1 would be to prevent...
  6. Re: Hives (unassembled) arrive tomorrow would like feedback/suggestions on my plan...

I have used rossman's cypress, it does as good as pine but not much better because it's new growth not old growth, I just painted mine, air staplers and jigs are fine if you're doing a lot of boxes, ...

    Re: Problems with Carniolan Queen

I agree, that's why I feed 1 part sugar 2 parts water, it stretches out the sugar and tells the bees that a flow is on without making them honey-bound as quickly. Also they have to process it more,...

    Re: Problems with Carniolan Queen

My bees have a lot of carnie in them, and like AR says feed them in late summer early fall to increase winter bee population, mine will completely stop laying in a dearth and in late fall. I feed...

Re: Wax the bars or not?

I don't, some old comb if you got it, otherwise just put them in, sometimes I will close up the box overnight and open it at sundown the next evening. make sure they have some sugar-water if you do,...

    Re: Colossal mistake

I think that noise of the hive with the dead queen is just because you stuck a frame from another hive with a foreign queen scent on it, and if it had been five minutes or more since the queen was...

Re: Pollen Backfilling the Brood Nest

I can't say if you screwed up or not, maybe someone else will chime in on that. But I do know that colonies will fill a brood box with pollen then move the brood nest up and in the fall go back down...

    Re: Maximizing homey harvest

The object of a cut-down split is to get the laying queen out so they won't have a queen to swarm with and no new brood to feed so they will make a good honey crop, meanwhile your old queen is...

Re: Split the hive, or get a nuc?

As others suggested you need to go into the hive and clean it up, if you want honey you should provide them with expansion room to keep them from swarming. If you want to split them I suggest an...

    Re: Location of bait hive

The general rules of baiting for a swarm are a combination of the "perfect" things to consider, they are guidelines that point someone in the right direction, not all good spots have all of them. I...

Re: Best Sources To Learn Queen Rearing

Check out a thread on Beesource by Dee A. Lusby " tradition methods of queen rearing " Just good simple ways for a small operator to raise some queens.
  18. Re: Have I made a mistake by switching boxes this early?

You should be good, hindsight is 20/20, and may have been better to remove one brood box, but you didn't and I'd just let it go for now, the extra room shouldn't matter since it's too early for the...

    Re: Deep frames

I do the same as squarepeg only I use fifty pound test mono fishing line instead of wire. For brood frames that are not extracted no wire or mono is needed, but I do all of mine so I can rotate them.

Re: Just wondering what type of bees to get

Check out your local bee club and ask if anyone has survivor bees, and buy a Nuc from them if possible. Cost a little more than a package but you could have bees that will over-winter.

Re: Plastic starters in TBH nuc frames

Talk about trimming the comb, that would work with the medium brood boxes, just " scab " a 1x1/4 on the top bar with length to fit the lang. I do it all the time, I put TBH bars into my langs to...
