    Re: Observation hive question

Thank you, D Coates! You hit the nail on the head - Unsure. But then, that's kind of how I started out into beekeeping at the beginning. Thankfully, I have some folks here on this site, who are going...

Thanks to all of you who submitted your helpful information. I have agreed to go ahead with managing the observation hive. I'm sure I'll be back here for some more advice.

    Re: Observation hive question

I have subsequently found out that the others involved will do nothing to the hive. They will only "observe and report" any issues to me. I will be solely responsible for the hive.

    Re: Observation hive question

I am in my 7th year of beekeeping. It's starting to sound like this is something for a much more experienced and seasoned beekeeper.

This OH is going to be located in a "for profit" enterprise....

    D Coates

" Be ready to replace the queen if they're getting ready to swarm."

    - I thought that when they swarmed, they left behind some swarm cells that would provide a new queen for the hive.

    Observation hive question

I have been asked if I would consider administrating an observation hive. It is an 8 frame hive that is to be located in a classroom or other indoor location. The idea is that these hives are to be...

Re: How often to harvest honey

    Good point.

With an extractor though, you probably want to harvest your honey only once to avoid the cleanup, right? You probably don't want to do smaller batches.

Re: How often to harvest honey

It probably seemed like a silly question, but I read somewhere that you get more honey if you wait until late in the season to harvest your honey. The idea was that the bees won't produce as much if...

    How often to harvest honey

I use the crush and strain method of harvesting honey. Is it alright to harvest your honey a couple of times during the summer instead of just once?

How often can/should you harvest your honey? I...

    Re: Moving hive 50'

Do you put the leafy branch inside the entrance or stick it into the ground right in front of the hive?

    Thanks!

    Moving hive 50'

Does it really work to put a branch in front of the hive entrance to be able to move the hive about 50'?

    Thanks!

    Thanks!

OK, the combine went flawlessly. Unlike the last combine I did, I did not have to watch my bees carrying the dead out all day long. In fact, there was only one bee on the landing board all day today....

    Re: Advice for a combine

These two hives are about 8' apart. Would it work if I did the combine in the same bee yard? I really don't want to move them unless it's necessary. I would like to just take the two boxes from the...

    Ed,

I believe it was in the 90's at the time. The trapped bees got cooked.

Here in South Carolina it gets hot. I attempted a combine a couple years ago, and I didn't put slits in the newspaper. The next day, I found that the bees were carrying dead bees out all day. It...

    Advice for a combine

I have a hive that has gone queenless, and the bee population is now dwindling. Earlier this year, I split this hive, and that split is doing very well.

Would I be able to just combine these two...

    Re: Honey water question

OK, that's what I was afraid of. I guess it's kind of like bottling honey that isn't capped - it ferments if the water content is too high.

Yes, it is very cool to watch them eat the honey leftovers from crush and strain.
