Thanks for the insight!! I need to check out this "Disease & Pests" forum more often...I've been hanging out in "Beekeeping 101" and I've learned more here in the last half hour than I have in the...

    Re: It finally happened... varroa..

This is the best insightful advice I've read on this website since I started reading over a year ago. Thanks for sharing. I know so very little, but I've got people coming to me and asking...

    Re: Homemade Extractor

I bought the $150 version from Mann Lake...it's a plastic and manual version, but that is what my teenager is for...nothing like a gripy teenage girl to make the extraction even more fun, but she...

    Re: Neighbor complaint

I agree with the buying of an effective hummingbird feeder.

I had a neighbor complain that my bees were using his bird bath to get water. I wanted to ask him what the $%^#@ did you want me to do...
  5. Re: Hive is consuming pollen like crazy...what do I do now?

Great, thanks for the insight!! I really appreciate the advise, especially the local advise, and I'll do that. I noticed that in the last week they've been lessening the syrup uptake here too, but...
  6. Hive is consuming pollen like crazy...what do I do now?

I have two hives...the healthier one is booming, feeding like crazy...they consumed half a pollen patty in two days. Do I keep feeding it the same, more or less? Queen is real healthy...lots of...

    Re: Buying packaged Bees???

I have limited experience in this hobby, but I bought mine from a local beekeeper and really glad I did. I haven't had some of the issues others have had from buying packaged bees, although that...
  8. Re: Have you been turned off by a Beekeeping instructor?

Couldn't agree more. It's what I did and I'm happy I did when I read about the problems people have purchasing bees from CA.

Furthermore, who cares if people around you have bees? Plenty of room...
  9. Re: Have I screwed up? Troubles with new hive.

    Yep, no fooling.
  10. Re: Have I screwed up? Troubles with new hive.

I did just what you suggested. Thanks for the help and verifying what I did was right. I'll keep an eye on them.
  11. Re: Have I screwed up? Troubles with new hive.

Do you mean the weaker hive? No I don't think it does. Couldn't find it. No brood so I doubt it.

Yes the thriving hive has one.
  12. Have I screwed up? Troubles with new hive.

I can answer that partially with a "yes" but here is the story...I would really appreciate your feedback. I'm fairly new to this beekeeping business.

My one hive is doing tremendously...lots of...
  13. Re: Question: If bees are fanning at the entrance...

I don't know much about this hobby at all and pretty new, but when I observed that, I thought they might be fanning out any residual smoke.

    Re: ? Bee Watering

[QUOTE=LanduytG;1145940]My hives are right next to water in a stream that runs kinda lazy. Their are some things in the water the bee's could get on to drink. But today I have been watching them...
  15. Re: Bee-Pro pollen substitute from Mann Lake plus other ????'s

Hey Joseph Clemens, thanks for your response. They wouldn't eat that stuff earlier this spring either when nothing was available...hmmm...guess I'll keep it and try it again this fall.
  16. Bee-Pro pollen substitute from Mann Lake plus other ????'s

Bees won't eat this stuff dry or made into patties...anyone else have the same problem? I think it's a serious waste of $$$.

Which begs another question...do I even need to feed them pollen...
  17. Re: Finding dried out dead larva...is this indicative of a disease or my paranoia?

Found out it was chalkbrood...thanks for the input!
  18. Re: Finding dried out dead larva...is this indicative of a disease or my paranoia?

After consulting a beekeeping guide I have, it looks like chalkbrood. Any ideas on how to deal with this successfully?
  19. Finding dried out dead larva...is this indicative of a disease or my paranoia?

Found a handful of dead larva the other day, then found some more today on my bottom board near the entrance. Should I treat for something or not worry about it. Tried to post a pic, but it...
  20. Re: Took hive apart--very little brood and a few other things....input requested!

Reintroduced a queen and a nuc to the hive to reinvigorate it. Did it last night...geez it's difficult doing this beekeeping stuff in the dark. Hopefully tomorrow it will quit raining long enough...
  21. Re: Took hive apart--very little brood and a few other things....input requested!

If it is a weak hive you may want to let it go and see what happens.

I like the sound of that. I've tried all day to contact the guy who lives locally who sold me these bees and he dodged two...
  22. Re: Took hive apart--very little brood and a few other things....input requested!

I haven't checked my mite levels in a while. I'll get on that right away.

If I introduce a new queen, and the old one is still there, do they duke it out in a "survival of the fittest" contest,...
  23. Took hive apart--very little brood and a few other things....input requested!

Today is a pretty nice day here--in the mid-50's and had the day off, so I took my hive apart for the first real inspection of the year. It has been really nice here lately with a day or two...

    Re: Over Emphasis on Feeding

Alright, I'll admit right away I don't know what the heck I'm doing but here goes...I started this hobby last spring about this time with one hive. My hive is still alive, however in September when...
