Get a jacket!
For years I used a veil and either 'regular' clothes or painter's overalls. Two seasons ago I purchased a jacket with integral hood. My only regret is that I was so cheap and it...
Vandalism of the sort where some idiots tip over some hives I can imagine, but spraying hives seems like a very pre-meditated action and makes me wonder why it was done...
I too enjoy his videos and...
Valley Bee Supply - within driving distance of you - had 15 or so 'hygenic italians' this afternoon. Located in Fishersville, VA. Tell'em Middle River Apiaries sent ya' ;-)
(no, i don't get a...
7 hives going in and as of yesterday, 7 coming out of winter. It's not over yet, but I'm cautiously optimistic!
Shenandoah Valley of VA... 7 hives going into winter, and seven hives active today (balmy in the 60's). I just hope they don't get started too early and then get hit by Feb/Mar cold snaps. Fingers...
Most of my question had to do with liability and possible legalities of delving in 'extermination' as a result of 'bee calls'. But i like the suggestions (Kilo's) which include removing the actual...
Serious question: why?
I *have* heard that some states require lic exterminator etc. but frankly, if i'm already out, and it's a blast from a can of hornet spray, I'm questioning 'why not'?

Got a call and of course it's actually a paper nest on a tree branch. Owner is scared of those 'nasty things' and willing to pay for an hour's removal fee (I'm charging $75/hr). I suggested they...
Usually, no problem. This past Saturday however, I got nailed a couple of times. Think i might gear up next time... LOL.
On another thread recently, someone was also suggesting upturned boards with a good sprinkling of sharp nails. Yikes!
I hear ya' on the cost. I'm down for around $350 to fence mine. I had to...
Dunno. And I've never used it, so just saying it's available and might be of interest. Here's one listing:

I recently installed one, yes. We've been seeing bear in the neighborhood.
I spoke with a lot of folks (internet, local bear expert game warden, other beeks) including someone locally who had a...
Against the law where I live...
Baited electrical fence. He needs to touch his nose to it one time.
Liquid smoke. Haven't used it personally but i know I've seen it on vendor's websites.
Good point - I also worry about fire when it's really dry as I am surrounded by heavy forest and a fire would...
"...drink at least half..."??? yikes! is that for real? I thought a normal dose was on the order of 25-50mg. I ask seriously because i recently got nailed by a handful of bees, resulting in...
I actually carry a small, fairly rigid spatula/scraper (1" wide blade, $0.99 at the hardware) with me, and use that to break the seal between difficult boxes. it's pretty easy to insert it at...
I'm going to disagree. Some cutouts are in places or for people that don't really 'care' about the bees, but just need a problem removed. The golf course stands to lose serious revenue and could...
Got'ya. As I said, bees in 'outyards' can be trickier to manage. But if you are feeding, I assume you look into them (to replenish feed) at least every couple of days? In any case, my point was...
^^^ what he said...
I'd add that to have that much infestation go undetected suggests you missed some pretty big warning signs. Ironically, someone who has 20+ hives (maybe in an outyard) can miss...
While it can be done w/out vac, I've just found the vac to make life much easier. Otherwise you'll probably put a lot of bees in the air... Hard to tell w/out seeing the tree/colony.
The sawzall...

Has anyone used a small OH like this? What I'd like is something that I can pull a frame out of nuc, transfer to OH, take to farm market for...
If the tree is going to be demolished anyway then i would suggest starting with vacuuming out the bees, followed by careful cutting open of tree (cordless sawzall might be better than chain saw) to...
This is absolutely awesome! Respect for you and for the beek that thought to send some honey over there!
I think it depends on what your goals are - commercial, hobby, serious hobby...
At minimum, everyone should have 2 hives and maybe a nuc or two. That makes it easier to be self-sustaining, and...
