    Re: Young larva too young?

Well I tried grafting again today. Turned most of them into mush, but I think I got 30 of them transferred ok. If I close one eye, and get real close, I can see the larva.

    I didn't have any...

    Re: Young larva too young?

I started round 3 today. I found my favorite queen on the 2nd frame in. Her hive is booming, and I was afraid I'd never find her. 3 deeps & 5 mediums. She is a Broke-T 2014 queen.

    The Starter has...

As closely as I can, except for the Nicot part. Also I cage the cells. Darn full time job gets in the way.

    Re: Young larva too young?

No. I remove the box with the queen, rotate it 180 and place it behind the now queen less section for a starter, then reunite the two the next day for a finisher.

    Re: Young larva too young?

    Great replies!

To be clear, I am using the nicot system, and only transferring cups with larva.

I started another starter last Sunday with 7 frames of capped brood above an excluder. I'll be...

    Young larva too young?

I started a new round of queens, and I just happened to pull my nicot grid at a time when their were still eggs, and very young larva. Most of the larva had almost no jelly yet.

    I only got 9 out...

    Re: Queen success! (So far)

I inspected my starter/finisher colony that I used for this last batch of cells. It has 13 deep frames of capped brood. I guess the nurse bees have been busy.

    Unbelievable!

Thanks for all the pics. I forgot about this thread until now.

Does your box have a hole in it? How do the bees get into the feeder?

    Mated and laying.

She's kinda runny, is she just young yet?

    Re: Queen success! (So far)

The 1st time I tried grafting with a Chinese grafting tool. I knew right away it wasn't gonna work for me. I have very poor vision. This time I used the Nicot grid.

    Re: Queen success! (So far)

I used a Nicot grid for "grafting", I can't see very well. I set up the starter/finisher as Michael Palmer describes in the National Honey Show video on Youtube.

    Queen success! (So far)

This is my second attempt at raising queens. The 1st attempt yielded 13 of 60 attempts. This time it's 25 of 30.

    Kinda excited! :)

    Michael,

In your breeder hive video, you went to your trailer to get a frame. Could you have just moved the empty that was next to the feed frame, and placed that one on the queen side?

    Thanks.

Does anyone want to trade honey? I would love to try Tupelo & Sourwood. I have tried Basswood. I have clover/alfalfa to trade.
