Re: Is it late to start a warre hive

Should be fine as long as you feed. I wouldn't cage the queen, though. If you want to be 100% sure, better staple a queen excluder to the front entrance. That'll do without prisoning the queen and...

Re: Do landing boards really help?

Oh I see. You think I am a bit simple minded or so. For your information: we tested it with several friends, different hive types and different landing boards. The above pictures were meant as...

Re: Do landing boards really help?

Compared to no landing board. (what else)

Bees in Europe have been selected for less and less propolis accumulation in the hive, so frames can be handled more effeciently. We don't have problems...

Re: Do landing boards really help?

The above statement of mine translates into: you either follow those, that do harvest acceptable amounts of honey and have boxes filled to the rim with bees. Or you follow just phantasies about what...

Re: Do landing boards really help?

Yes. The vertical surface of the tree makes a loooong landing board.

Beside that, some of my friends found out, that a landing board makes a +10% difference in honey. That's enough for me to use...
  8. Re: What Are You Using for Bait In Wasp Traps

Pure apple juice. Catches wasps but not bees.
  9. Re: Sale of honey in bulk among European countries

Contact Rogerio Felizardo from the Lang company. See: http://www.biohonig.eu/biohonig/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=34&Itemid=121

There are many others, but this may be a start.
  10. Re: What is the true cost of foundationless?

This is the "study". Four hives were used. Whew, I am impressed.

    Side by side comparison:

I put two foundations in an otherwise empty hive box, just topbars.

    Re: Brood in honey uppers

Harvesting honey from deadouts makes excluders unnecessary. Now I know the trick. I learn something new every day.

Re: Extractor-less honey by Flow Hive

But as you as an experienced beekeeper know, once a comb is marked as "brood comb" by pheromones, it will receive brood as long as the queen has access to it.
In case you restrict the queen from...

Re: Extractor-less honey by Flow Hive

    You mean: your girls.

In the movie More than Honey, which by the way may have laid the path to things like the FlowHive-hype, the owner of the Miller Honey farms calls his bees "girls",...

How many tons of honey do you harvest, you say? Just wonder.
  20. Re: Old Beeks: Have you built up any immunity to stings?

What I said already. Set your goal to get resistant. Work your way there like you wish and feel safe and comfortable. I have a lot of beginners start beekeeping. They usually start with veil and all...
  21. Re: Old Beeks: Have you built up any immunity to stings?

One need to be very careful, if you get stung in the past and suddenly develop reactions. Better see a doctor and test for bee venom allergy. But wait with the test at least two weeks, because...
  22. Re: Old Beeks: Have you built up any immunity to stings?

At least I don't call people dumb.

It doesn't take manliness to work bees without veil, you only need to be a beekeeper who knows how to work bees. So the bees don't get angry. Get some smoke and...
  23. Re: Old Beeks: Have you built up any immunity to stings?

    No drama...oh yeah...

I reckon who cannot take stings is no beekeeper. Period. I don't see me working all day for days in any sort of protection. Don't need it anyway. Don't own a veil. I don't...

  25. Re: Impressions on beekeeping with a Warré or Gatineau hive

Some more TBH impressions. Hive swarmed, not much honey has build up yet, new queen is laying a firm egg pattern though.
